The Rio Grande Valley is experiencing a significant boom, and to support this growth, Texas is investing $26 million into the expansion of the Mid-Valley Airport-KTXW in Weslaco, TX. This substantial investment aims to create more jobs, commerce, and opportunities in one of Texas’s fastest-growing regions.
A Catalyst for Regional Growth
Governor Abbott highlighted the Rio Grande Valley’s importance to the state’s future, citing its size, growing workforce, and contributions to the country. “As the Rio Grande Valley grows, the Weslaco Mid-Valley Airport will be a key part of that success,” he said. “And the state of Texas will be with you every step of the way.”
The funding is broken down into several key projects:
- $10 million for the airport expansion.
- $8 million for drainage and improvement projects.
- $8 million for emergency first responder facilities.
Abbott emphasized that “airports are vital to a community and also vital for economic growth.”
A Win for the Whole Region
Weslaco Mayor Adrian Gonzalez expressed his gratitude to Governor Abbott for recognizing the region’s potential. He stated, “This is a win for the region of the Rio Grande Valley.” Gonzalez added, “Thank you for seeing the potential, not only of Weslaco, but of the whole region … When we win, this whole region wins.”
